What is a "throbber"?

Throbbers are replacement animations for a web browser's animated icon. In Netscape, it is the N icon with the stars that shoot across whenever you are transferring data, and in Internet Explorer it is the animated E icon that sort of rotates into a globe.

CHANGE THESE

TO THIS

PLEASE NOTE

This is only one frame of the "Throbber". It is actually animated, showing several pictures of Amanda!!
Also These will not work on a Macintosh. Sorry..

How to install this throbber

For Netscape 3.x (I'm Not sure if this works with Netscape 4.x yet)

The images are icons 30x30 pixels and 48x48 pixels respectively. If your Netscape directory buttons are selected to be displayed, Netscape uses the larger 48 pixel icon, and if your directory buttons are NOT displayed, then Netscape uses the smaller 30 pixel icon.
Installation is fairly easy and straightforward.

  1. Download these two files (48M.BMP163K & 30M.BMP64K) into your Netscape program directory (typically this is C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator\Program)
  2. Then, just start up Netscape and voila! Your Amanda Marshall Throbber is now installed.

For MS Internet Explorer 3 & 4.

To install the throbber in your browser,
  1. Download the throbber for MS Explorer 3&4 MSTHROB.BMP163K to the WINDOWS directory.
  2. Go to the start menu, then select Run.
  3. Type "regedit" without the quotes and another navigable window will appear.
  4. Use it to navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
  5. Now, from the file menu select, EDIT-NEW-STRING VALUE
  6. Create a string with the name, BrandBitmap and as it's value give it the full path to the AMANDA MARSHAL throbber file. (For example, our throbber, msthrob.bmp, would be called like this if it were in the WINDOWS directory: C:\WINDOWS\msthrob.bmp)
  7. If there already is a BrandBitmap string, you can right click on it and choose, MODIFY. Then just change the value to the full path to your AMANDA MARSHALL throbber.

Some Comments

Netscape forces placement of a 'Netscape' button next to the Stop button whenever a customized throbber is installed. Clicking on this button takes you to the Netscape Home Page. Some people find it annoying to have this extra button, but it really doesn't do anything special or look out of place.
